Welcome to Physical Education & Sport
The Physical Education Department consists of a friendly, highly committed and well qualified team of six P.E. specialists. Physical Education and Sport have a high profile within the school and wider community where staff and students recognise the value of the subject and how it contributes to the wider school.
All members of the department are involved in running extra-curricular clubs, team practices and taking fixtures. Our students are totally committed to Southfields Academy sport and a large number of our students stay until late in the evening to participate in the extra-curricular programme the department offers.
We proudly boast some of the best sporting facilities in South London including two sports halls, a trampolining hall, two floodlit outdoor and one indoor netball courts, a newly refurbished fitness suite, a floodlit all-weather 4G pitch, a competition length swimming pool, athletics facilities, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and a climbing wall.
What knowledge and skills will students develop at KS3?
The P.E. National Curriculum has been designed to develop student competence, confidence and expertise in practical situations across a broad and balanced curriculum.
It aims to ensure that all students should understand what constitutes an effective performance and how they could apply these principles to their other work.
All students in Years 7-9 will have 2 hours of P.E. per week and will also have the opportunity to attend a variety of inclusive extra-curricular activities during and after school.
Students will be encouraged and given the opportunity to develop a wide range of physical, personal and social skills. As a result, we would expect students to develop the confidence to take part in physical activity as well as learn about the value of a healthy, active lifestyle.
What knowledge and skills will students develop at KS4?
At Key Stage 4, students get the opportunity to further develop skills and techniques from Key Stage 3.
Students will have 2 lessons of P.E. per week as well as having the opportunity to attend and compete in a number of sports clubs during and after school.
GCSE P.E.
Students will be given the option to further develop their knowledge and understanding of Physical Education and prepare for a career in the sports industry with an examined course which adds a further 3 hours of P.E. to their weekly compulsory lesson.

The areas cover an array of topic areas which include:

The examination is weighted at:
60% written examination (2 papers)
30% practical performance
10% written non-exam assessment
